Existen diversas competencias en Sayulita: Vans Duct Tape: reúne a una comunidad internacional de surfistas, artistas y shapers (artesanos de tablas de surf). Sayulita fue la primera sede en el país para «World Stand Up Paddle» en 2015. El surf es uno de los cinco nuevos deportes que se incorporan al programa de los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio. Cada año llegan visitantes de las olas principalmente de Estados Unidos, Canadá, Argentina e Italia. Durante el invierno llegan olas que alcanzan los 4 metros; esto sucede sólo 2 o 3 veces al año. Los eventos más importantes que se han realizado hasta ahora son Festival Sayulita, Liga Pee Wee, Abierto Mexicano de Surf, Mexilog Fest y Sayulita Beach Festival.
